Having been involved in the road sweeper hire business for a few years, I can tell you that litter left on streets is detrimental to the quality of life for the citizens of the community. It sends a message that people don’t care about themselves, their surroundings or other people. Crime seems to increase where litter is prevalent because it telegraphs that people are not looking out for each other. It shows that people living in the area do not have pride in their community. Rubbish left on the streets also can be a significant health hazard. It will attract rodents and insects which can spread disease. Also, broken bottles or other dangerous items discarded on the streets can be picked up by children playing in the area and cause significant injury. When people see litter and rubbish on the streets, they might see no reason to keep their own yards neat and clean which leads to a decrease in property values and an increase in vandalism. It is a shame that the simple act of littering can have such negative consequences.
