Turning My Back Deck Into a Sun Room

posted on 2 November 2011

With my collection of DIY tools, including slab saws, I do like to work on my house. I have always enjoyed sitting in my big chair next to the door to the back deck, but sometimes it would just be nice to sit in a sun room. That's why I am going to be adding an extension to the back of my house. Presently there is the kitchen, dining area, and the deck goes off of the dining area. When I finish with my renovations, there will be a sun room rather than a deck, and also a laundry area off of that, behind the kitchen. This will make it so much nicer in terms of doing the laundry, and sitting in my new sun room. I can't wait to get started on my renovations! However I am a bit concerned about the potential of noise from the laundry room. Perhaps I will look into getting soundproofing around that area, so that my sun room will be nice and quiet, a relaxing extension to the back of my house, where I can sit with my book in my big comfy chair and bask in the sunlight coming through the windows.

Exciting Passionfruit Fresh from Our Garden

posted on 27 October 2011

I'm a keen gardener - and with the tougher jobs you'll even see me wearing ppe workwear to keep myself protected! The most exciting new thing from our garden this year will be a crop of passion fruit. We first planted a passion fruit plant purchased at a local nursery about two years ago. The first two years we had plenty of flowers which are quite beautiful and unique, but we only developed a couple of fruit which never matured and eventually fell off the vine. The nursery and my research on the internet told me we should be quite able to grow useful passion fruit in our part of California, so we were hopeful things would improve. Well, this year our passion fruit vine has produced over thirty passion fruit and they have gotten bigger and bigger. I am confident that soon they will ripen and we will be harvesting many delicious passion fruit. Now I am collecting recipes that use passion fruit in anticipation of a bountiful crop. I hope our success continues this year and in years to come.

A Big Sound System to Tease My Neighbors

posted on 6 October 2011

I live in a flat, so there are people living all around me. There is one man that has some parties occasionally with some music and other noises. One day I just thought that it would be awesome, if I could blast my neighbors with my sound system. It could have speakers all over the flat, like one in each corner of the whole flat, and some on the walls, secured with cage nuts. And there could also be some big central speakers with some deep bass. It would just be fun to count the time in which the old ladies would come complaining that their whole flats are vibrating. It would be connected to my home computer, so I could play any song in the world through the internet. And also if I had a big television, the speakers would make me feel like I am in a movie theatre, without going out of my house. Just have to go to the store for popcorn.

Cleaning Cast Iron Cookware is a Grueling Job

posted on 28 August 2011

As much as I love my cast iron cookware, they are the hardest and most difficult items to keep clean. I've worked for an oil tank removal service in the past, and this is up there in terms of difficulty. When I first acquired my collection, it was in very poor shape. The pieces had belonged to my grandparents, and were used for dozens of years. However, after my grandmother died, the pieces were put in the basement, where they stayed for at least 20 years until I unearthed them. There was a lot of history in the grunge, grime, grease and rust, and I could vividly remember the bacon sizzling in that heavy black skillet. So I pulled out the frying and grill pans and the kettle, and started to give them a good cleaning. However, it was not an easy task. In fact, it took me over a week of hard scrubbing with wire brushes and then heat treatments in the oven to get some of the layers off. At times, I was ready to give up, but I kept remembering how these pots and pans helped nourish a poor family of eleven growing up in the coalfields of western Pennsylvania. So I continued to scrub and season and heat over and over, until I had removed the very last layers of rust and grease. I was now ready to cook my first meal using this precious and very clean cast iron. And gosh darn … it was delicious. Fried cabbage and kielbasa, a staple in my family growing up!
